Thanks Big Lots for sponsoring this post. However, all thoughts and opinions about their fabulousness are my own.

I don’t know about you, but I’m ready to enjoy my outdoor living spaces. Winter and I just don’t get along. I prefer being outside, with the sun shining down, enjoying the beauty of the great outdoors. So this year, as I looked at what I needed to do to, I decided that I needed to bring my deck back up to par. To that end, I decided to focus on transforming my spacious deck into several intimate areas, accentuated with colorful planters, to tie everything in.
I consider myself lucky to have both a patio and deck in my backyard. Unfortunately for my deck, I’ve spent most of my time focusing on my patio because I knew that would be where we would be placing our BBQ pit to cook and the patio table to eat. And because that’s the way it’s been for a long time, it’s totally become the place to hang out during BBQs. However I knew the deck had the potential of being the spot where my guests could retire to have intimate conversations or just chill and enjoy a nice frosty beverage or dessert.
With that in mind I asked my Dad to help me start the beautification process by re-staining the deck, as I headed to Big Lots to find some uber cute, colorful planters to add a living element, texture and an overall homey feel. If you haven’t been to your local Big Lots yet this season, be prepared to want to buy all your outdoor planters, decorations and outdoor furniture there. I was a little bit like a kid in a candy store, getting distracted by all the beautiful colors of summer on display. But I made myself stick to planter shopping because I knew that as soon as the deck dried, we’d be ready to host our first BBQ of the season. So I made my way to the planter aisle, and after a few minutes of debate over a good color scheme, I headed to the register. It was on the way there that I stumbled across a little something I had been wanting for my deck for a while – a red folding chaise lounge. So in it went into my shopping cart.
When I got my new buys home, I started staging my intimate spaces. I began by making sure that the plants I added into my new planters were of varying heights, colors & textures and that they would thrive and survive the deck’s sun exposure. They’re a little bare now, but I know that the purples, pinks and yellows will come to life soon enough to add that living element needed to warm up the space.
Then I added in seating I already had on hand,
color,
and a few extras to add that homey feeling it was missing before.
See, while I knew I wanted to make my deck more inviting, my budget was such that I had to work with the outdoor furniture I already had and rely on my few buys to bring in the colorful punch needed. And just like that, the deck came alive and more inviting than it’s ever been.
True to the saying – If you build it, they will come – so came my family. And just as I anticipated, we still cooked and ate our BBQ on the patio, but we definitely moved over to the deck to chill, laugh and enjoy some yummy desserts.
Needless to say my deck revamp was a success and it didn’t bust my budget. While I know I’ll probably find myself back at Big Lots looking for more items to add to the beautification process this summer, thanks to my ability to repurpose items on the deck and Big Lots great prices, I have the funds to host another soirée soon.
The added bonus is – this post is being featured, in Spanish, on Big Lots Latino. Yes!! I can’t believe it myself. This Mexican-American chica from Texas is a featured blogger on a national retailer’s site. Ahhh, so excited!!
It’s truly an honor to work with Big Lots and to be featured next to fab bloggers like Crafty Chica and others that I’ve admired along the way. It really means a lot to me. And what’s even more exciting is that I’ve been invited back to post something for June as well. I can’t really get into too many details yet, but I’ve been approved to tackle another outdoor spot, which due to a recent squirrel attack, needs some much needed attention. I promise to share more soon, so stay tuned. I can’t wait for you all to see what I’m talking about.
In the meantime, head over to Big Lots Latino to see my fellow bloggers creativity and style and to give my post some love with comments, shares, etc. It would mean the world to me!
Thank you! Gracias!
