Yes, staying active doesn’t have to mean running a marathon or spending endless hours at the gym, although I love going to the gym. It’s more about finding things that not only elevate the heart rate, but are fun, and get us out into the sun for some much needed vitamin D.
Creative Ways to Stay Active
Staying active is part of living a healthy life. It not only helps reduce the risk of illness, but it plays a part in keeping our mind, body, and spirit in balance. The trick is finding something we enjoy doing. That’s why I wanted to share some creative ways to stay active and have fun too.
How to Get Active at Work
I don’t know about you, but I work in an office. That means I sit and stare at a computer for at least 8 hours a day, which isn’t ideal for my health. That’s why, instead of being glued to my chair, I’ve made several changes which keep me moving throughout the day.
Drink lots of water. It’s not only good for you, but it significantly increases your bathroom trips. That way you not only get to move more, but you also get to enjoy mental breaks throughout your day. Win, win.
Take your lunch break. I know so many people who either work through lunch or eat their lunch at their desk. I get it, sometimes we have to, but if it’s a light week, take your lunch break. If you can’t leave work, at least head outside to eat. You’re mind, body, and spirit will not only enjoy the change of scenery, but you’ll feel refreshed and ready to take on the rest of the day.
Have walking meetings. If you need to meet with a coworker, invite them to walk the building, parking lot, etc. with you for a walk-and-talk meeting. It will not only get your body moving, but it may even get your juices going and spur some innovation and creativity.
How to Stay Active on Nights and Weekends
For me, finding ways to stay active nights and weekends is all about keeping it fun and easy. These are my main go-tos.
Take a walk. Head outdoors with your furbaby, and/or invite your favorite person to join you for a walk around your neighborhood or your favorite hiking trail.
If that’s not enough to get you out of the house, get your shopping or people watching on at your local farmer’s market or other outdoor event. The distraction will not only allow your mind and body some time to clear, but it will melt stress away.
Dance. I know, it may not be for everyone, but I love to dance so I had to include it. Not only is it fun, but it’s very social. You get to meet new people as you get the heart going. The best part is that you don’t need a partner or have to know how to dance to join in. All you have to do is let the rhythm move you.
Go outside and play. There are so many options. You can play with your kids, your dog, or on the cool obstacle style playscapes popping up. You can even join a league or pick up game of softball, kickball, bowling, horseshoes, darts, etc. The point is to jump in and do something. It not only gets you active, but you’ll also get to meet new people, and have fun, which is what life is all about!
Make Time for Fun and Relaxation!
Regardless of which activity or activities you add to your life, have fun with it. And don’t stress if you aren’t able to pry yourself from your desk or couch. Every day is a new opportunity to try again. Perfectionism and deprivation is not the goal. It’s about finding a balance and spending time being active with family and friends. That’s definitely my favorite of it all.
