I don’t know about you, but learning how to balance a fun and healthy life can sometimes feel impossible, but it doesn’t have to.
That sense of will power, or the lack there of, sometimes makes us feel like we have to shy away from social situations and time with friends. But that’s not the answer. We’re social beings by nature. Honoring that, and our need to enjoy life, is part of maintaining a healthy life.
The key is making better choices. Not only in what we put in our bodies, but the people and experiences that we allow around us. It’s definitely a process. That’s why I welcome any assistance in being able to differentiate between the people and things we need to let go of and those we need to embrace. Here are a few things helping me along the way.
Redefining Healthy
Being healthy for me goes beyond a dress size, the numbers on a scale, or how many hours I spend at the gym. It’s about finding a balance in mind, body, and spirit. It’s not only about being physically healthy, but emotionally healthy as well. Movement and the outdoors play a huge part in keeping me balanced.
That’s why I enjoy going on hikes and/or attending festivals with family and friends. It not only allows me time to de-stress, but helps my body feel energized, and replenishes my mind and spirit.
If that’s not you’re thing, find what is and do that. There are so many things to explore. Maybe it’s your local parks and/or hiking trails. Maybe it’s outdoor festivals, farmer’s markets, or even your neighborhood. Just get out and enjoy nature. Either by yourself, or with positive and supportive family and friends. Yes, you have the power to choose who you take along for the ride. Leave the toxic, energy sucking people in your life at home.
Fostering Kindness and Connection
Stop depriving yourself from attending social functions because you feel you’ll use the opportunity to overindulge, or because you don’t feel worthy enough to attend. I get it. As girls especially, we allow our weight to define our self worth. But like I pointed out earlier, we are more than that. We are all-encompassing social beings that thrive on connection, community, and relationships. If we allow our self loathing to keep us from seeing and being seen, we continue to foster a mind, body, spirit imbalance, which takes a toll.
Instead, I’d encourage you to place those fears aside and choose to be kind to yourself. I know it’s easier to be kind to strangers than it is to be kind to ourselves, but we deserve it too. I’d also encourage you to reach out and connect with those who support you and want to see you win.
The more and more you become mindful of these things and reconnect with yourself and those around you, the easier you’ll be able to regain balance in your life. And living a balanced life is what makes it easier to opt for healthier options and behaviors, without having to compromise time with friends and family. Even if that involves enjoying a great meal, or a nice cold beer.
