Yes, that’s right – Latinapalooza is here! What is Latinapalooza? It’s that point in time, toward the end of this year’s Hispanic Heritage Month celebrations, where Latinas are the stars of three TV shows this Fall. That’s right, Latina leads in three TV shows! Now that’s a reason to celebrate! So sit back, get ready to be impressed by this talented group of Latinas and set your DVR timers to watch as they take over our TV screens this Fall.
The first to kick off our Fall season – on Friday, October 10th at 8:30/7:30pm Central – is the ever funny Cristela Alonzo, who is originally from the Rio Grande Valley of Texas (where I grew up) and the star of the ABC show by her name – Cristela. How cool is that? I’m bummed I didn’t get a chance to meet her in person during her participation at the People En Español Festival held in San Antonio, TX earlier this year, but I did get a glimpse of her new show and it’s fantastic! Basically the show centers around Cristela’s dream of becoming a lawyer while trying to get her traditional Mexican-American family to understand her struggles along the way. All I can say as the first member of my Mexican-American family to go to college and not only get my bachelors, but then continue on to get my masters, I can totally relate. 😉 Can’t wait to see it all play out on screen 🙂
Plus if you need a little extra motivation to watch, the super hot Carlos Ponce is also in this one. 🙂 (Super lucky to have gotten to meet him at Hispanicize.)
The next Latina to grace us with her premier – on Saturday, October 11th at 10/9pm Central – is the beautiful, talented, and Emmy nominated TV Host – Pili Montilla in Té Para Tres on MegaTV. It’s a “…place of musical discovery that provides an entertaining, intimate, and spontaneous look at a “day in the life” of today’s most unique and talented new Latino musicians. Viewers will get access to exclusive places like recording studios, homes, backstage, and concerts of these rising stars and award winning artists…” How cool is that?
If you don’t happen to get MegaTV where you live, you can still watch episodes here, so please do. As I am extremely honored and proud of my friend Pili and love supporting her every step of the way.
Last but not least is the wonderfully talented Gina Rodriguez. My love affair with her began back in 2012 when I got a chance to meet her at Hispanicize. At the time she had just wrapped on Filly Brown and the following year I got a chance to hang out again as she and the rest of the cast promoted the release of Filly Brown at Hispanicize and during Cine Festival here in San Antonio, Tx.
Now I’m equally proud of her success in landing the staring role in the CW’s Jane the Virgin, where she plays a young, devout Latina who discovers that she was accidentally artificially inseminated.
As you can tell, my love for these women runs deep. Not only are they female leads on their perspective shows, but they hold a special place in my heart because they are paving the way for other Latinas, just like others have done for them. But instead of playing supporting roles, they are the ones in the forefront, which makes this chica super proud. 🙂 The added bonus is that I’ve been graced with the opportunity to meet and interact with these fabulous ladies and their humble nature and ability to connect with others has not been wasted on me. It is for that reason that I will continue to follow their careers and support them along the way. I hope that you fall in love with them as I have and will do the same.
Happy Watching!
