What’s in a Name?

What’s in a Name?

This is part of a sponsored campaign with DiMe Media and Coca-Cola.  However, all opinions expressed are my own.

What’s in a name? Isn’t it just a grouping of letters that when uttered together causes you to turn? Sure, it is exactly that, but it’s so much more. It’s not only one of the first things that’s yours when enter this world, but your last name carries with it your heritage, culture and ultimately your legacy.

Rocio Chavez was the identity I was born into. While no one in my family had previously held the name Rocio (pronounced ro-SEE-o and means morning dew in Spanish) many held the name Chavez (which came from llaves meaning keys in Spanish).

It is on the Chavez name that I stand, that those who came before me stood and that those who are yet to come will stand.  While the Chavez name has been popularized by an activist, boxers and many a politician, my pride in the name comes from those directly in my blood line. We’re a humble, hard working, witty, inventive, prideful, self-motivated, colorful bunch looking to be better and do better for our generation and those to come.

My parents both came from ranches in Nuevo Leon, Mexico and together with their families, decided that immigrating to the States was the best option toward a better life for them and their children. And I have to agree. In comparison to how they grew up on the ranches of Mexico, to how we grew up in the States, and how my nieces and nephews are growing up across Texas, their decision was definitely the best in continuing to bring the best out of the Chavez clan.
